It's a bit of a drive, but sounds like a great experience! This 14-acre ranch is set on the San Mateo coast. The mission of Pie Ranch is "to inspire and connect people to know the source of their food, and to work together to bring greater health to the food system from seed to table." One way Pie Ranch does this is to host monthly Work Days for families. The Work Day starts at 1pm at the Roadside Barn. Families can sign up for farm chores such as cultivating and weeding around crops, planting pumpkins and beans, painting rooms in the historic farm house, or moving and stacking wood for the wood-burning oven. Kids are encouraged to help with the work, and take play breaks around the farm. The Work Day ends around 5pm, when the Potluck begins. Families set out their dishes for all to share. The best and easiest items are: pasta, bread & cheese, dips & veggies, and cold meat plates. Pie Ranch also recommends vegetarian dishes made from locally-sourced ingredients. From 6-9pm there is a Barn Dance complete with fiddlers and square dancing for the whole family!
A few things to remember:
- Bring water bottles, layers of clothing, sunscreen, closed toe shoes, dishes and utensils for the potluck, and gardening gloves.
- Dance is $10-$20 (sliding scale) to help pay for band and caller. Children under 12 are free. Discount given if you participated in the Work Day!
- Potluck and Barn Dance are alcohol-free events!
