Head up to the beautiful foothills for California's largest and oldest Celtic Faire, held at the Motherlode Fairgrounds.  Enjoy Highland Games, jousting tournaments, fencing and street performances; learn about Celtic history and see modern clans; be entertained by Irish step dancing, fire eaters, and jugglers!

Tickets can be purchased online, and savings when purchased in advance are significant when bringing an entire family.

Friday is "School & Family Day".  Ticket prices are reduced for a shorter, less-raucous day of Celtic fun!

Saturday and Sunday are full days of fun, with more details on the Faire's daily events schedule.

Parking at the Faire can be tricky.  There are two lots at the fairgrounds, in which parking costs $10; these areas fill quickly.  There is free parking along Forest Street, across from the fairgrounds, but there are time restrictions and permit-only parking areas, so be sure to make note of this when selecting a spot.  In an effort to help, the Faire is running a shuttle service this year, stopping at the Wal-Mart parking lot (in front of the old Mervyn's), in downtown Sonora (at the Umpqua Bank) and in front of the Opera Hall.

Fun event! It is very family friendly. There were kids, babies and strollers everywhere. We enjoyed the period costumes, Celtic music and dance, the bagpipers, and especially the jousting. We bought our son a wooden sword and shield and he had a great time playing swords with other boys his age. We even have a picture of him defeating a knight, who was nice enough to pose for the photo. The Sonora fairgrounds are small, which is good because you can move around the faire easily and get out quickly when the kids start to lose it. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because it is a bit pricey, $25/adult at the gate. Otherwise, it would have been 5 stars. ...more
