The Modesto Junior College Civic Engagement Project – Project Green invites the community to join the 6th annual Earth Day Celebration on MJC’s East Campus Quad. This year’s theme is “Living local, living healthy and thinking global,” and the event is planned to heighten environmental awareness and educate the campus, community, and children from local schools about green and sustainable practices.

  • Inspect electric and hybrid cars on display, including the Chevy Volt and Nissan Leaf, and decide whether one of these Earth-friendly vehicles could be your next car.  Information on Commute Connection, public transit, biking and walking will also be available.
  • The significant impact of purchasing local produce and products will be featured, including several local produce sources such as Rancho Piccolo, Kline Organics, Lorina’s Edible Garden, Green’s Market and Modesto Farmers Market.
  • MJC Community Education, Sierra Club, Audubon Society, John Muir Center at University of the Pacific, Tuolumne River Trust, Valley Sporting Goods and others will be on hand to provide information for local family fun.
  • Modesto Irrigation District (MID) will provide energy tips and resources to save electricity and lower energy bills. Information on the “4-R’s” (refuse, reduce, re-use and recycle) will be provided by Habitat for Humanity, Modesto Junk, Project Green, Armour sans Anguish, Bloomez, City of Modesto and MJC Student Environmental Club.
  • Interactive activities include a children’s zone for art and planting, a recycling contest, petting zoo, crazy chemistry, solar cooking, learning to compost, raising backyard chickens, paddling canoes and kayaks, doing yoga and learning about air quality.
